Cry, the Beloved Country Book I

Stephen Kumalo is a kind, humble, respectful, and extremely pious man through and through. Kumalo, as a character, has changed immensely over the course of the book. If a person did not know that Cry, the Beloved Country was a fictional story they would never believe that Stephen was a made up character. Reverend Kumalo has a different type of personality. Kumalo is a round and dynamic character in many different ways.
Reverend Kumalo is a kind, humble, respectful, and pious man throughout the novel. A little girl brings Kumalo the letter and he inquires, “Perhaps you might be hungry, small one", he pronounces, “Go to the mother then. Perhaps she has some food." From these couple of lines we can see that Kumalo is kind and humble. He offers her food, but does not forcibly push her to go eat the food. Kumalo accepts the help of a man to find the bus station. The man goes on to ask, “Shall I get your ticket for you, umfundisi?" Kumalo gives the man money and never sees him again. The Reverend shows respect to the man and how pious he is as a man. Instead of refusing the man's help he kindly accepted it. Through his faith he was able to trust this man with his money, he was disappointed but not truly angry.
Mr. Kumalo changes over the course of the novel. He goes from being religious and naive to beginning to lose faith and more refined. A young man inquires of Kumalo,"Have you your money for the ticket?" and "Shall I get your ticket for you, umfundisi?" Kumalo was able to trust this man like no one else would have because of his faith. His faith was not the only force acting on his trust, it was also his naivety. Reverend Kumalo begins to lose his faith when he hears the words "...it was he who fired the shot." uttered. He started to doubt God and his faith. Through this experience Kumalo also becomes refined from learning that through suffering he can gain experience.
Stephen's realistic quality is incredible for a fictional character. Throughout the book he feels pain and the reader feels his pain because it is conveyed so exquisitely. Kumalo fears that his son his in prison and a young man says to him, “I have heard what you fear. It is true." Once Kumalo hears these words his world falls apart and because he reacts as he does you can't help but feel sorry for him, even though you know he is just a fictional character. The author wanted to portray how most South Africans live, and how a lot of real people live like this every day.
While Stephen has good qualities in his personality he also has bad qualities. Whenever the times get tough for Kumalo he begins to lose his faith in God. He does not think that God cares about his life. This is a negative quality to Kumalo's personality. Mr. Kumalo has an incredible sense of right and wrong. He never does anything truly wrong and when he does he deeply regrets it. He knows when he is at a fault. This is a positive thing because it is an important quality to know when he is at or not at fault in any situation.

This I Believe

        The Power of Influence

A person can be influenced in many ways while they make their journey through their life. The influences that ovvur in the lives of others is what makes a person who they are. I believe that influences decide who we are and where we will be in the future. Without these influences no one person would be uniqe, they would all be the same, they would all be bland.
Influences are what lead a person down their path in life. They are what makes them turn out to be who and what they will be. They determined the choices the person will make and how successful they will be in their life. Influences can vary in the way they come to a person and the severity of them.
The influences in my life are my parents. My dad is a retired paramedic and my mom is a caring mother. Another influence of mine would be my asthma. These influences make me want to go into the medical field so I can save lives and care for others no matter what their disease happens to be. My mom's open-mindedness is what led me to be open to many new ideas.
I believe and trust in influences to keep creating uniqe people in this world. People from all different backgrounds are one of a kind in their own way becuase of the influences that carry them through life. Without these influences we would all be the same, bland person. The only thing that would be diffent without thses influences would be our physical features.
As we go through life, as I have said, influences make us who we are in life. We are able to influence others using the influences that we have taken in over our life time. Its good to influence the next generation in a good way for the good of the world and the generations to come. I believe in building a better future through our influences.

Everyday Cheesecake

Everyday Cheesecake

Ingredients:

  • 2 Pkg. of Philadelphia Cream Cheese
  • 3 Tbsp. Crisco Oil
  • 1 Yellow or White Cake Mix
  • 1/2 Cup of Sugar
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 1/2 Cups Cold Milk
  • 3 Tbsp. Lemon Juice
  • 3 Tsp. Vanilla
  • Pie Filling of Choice

Preparation:

Before preparing anything you must first heat up the oven to 350°F. While the oven heats up to a blazing 350°F spray a 9x13 inch pan with oil. After placing the pan aside reserve 1 cup of cake mix. Using the remaining cake mix, mix together 1 egg and 3 tablespoons of Crisco Oil.
While we wait for the oven to complete the heating process my mom and I would watch television. Television would always help the time fly by swiftly. She would want to watch a British show and I would want to watch an American show. We would argue about which show to watch and when it came down to it I would win the argument. I would use the line, "But I'm the child".
After a while of watching television I would get up and finish preparing the dough and press it into the bottom of the pan. Afterwards, I would start to prepare the filling by softening the cream cheese. You can either put it in the microwave to soften it or let it sit out at room temperature for 2 hours. I go back and sit down and watch more television with my mom. Sometimes I liked to mix the fillings that were mixed.

"Can we put strawberry with cherry", I asked.

My mother would respond, " No, that is way to much trouble."

I would not say another word about the cake filling and would do what she said. To make the filling you need to add 2 eggs, 3 teaspoons vanilla, 3 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 packages of cream cheese, 1/2 cup of sugar, and the 1 cup of cake mix that you reserved at the beginning. This needs to be blended until smooth and then poured carefully into the prepared crust.
Once the filling mixture is done you put the cake in the oven to bake at 350°F for 40 to 55 minutes. If the cake bakes for too long it will crack and be ruined. Its important to check on it consistently during the last 10 minutes of baking. When done the cake must be cooled to add the pie filling on top.Refrigerate the cake for 4 hours or overnight.
When the cake is finally ready you can cut the cake with a serrated knife that was warmed in hot water for a smooth cut. Once it is on your plate your ready to eat and enjoy your cheesecake.

The Kindness of Strangers
"The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World”, which was written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, is a tale about a dead man who washes ashore and is taken to a village. The way the people of this village treat the man is truly inspiring. The men and women of the story have two totally different attitudes towards the man’s presence. Everyone in the village pitches in to help the man even though he is already dead.
The people of the village in the story treat this man, who is dead, with the utmost respect. All the men of the village set off to neighboring villages to find out if the man belongs to one of them. While the men are away the women are getting the man ready for his burial at sea if his village is not found. If people in today's society could treat people with half the respect these villagers treated this man with, than the world would be a better place. The people of the village did everything they could to help the poor man.
While both the man and women did everything they could do to help, they still had different attitudes about the man. All the women of the village adored the man and wanted to keep him, they even gave him a name. They named him Esteban, I am assuming that they named him this because it fit who he was and was not his actual name. The men, however, just wanted to see the dead man off and bury him in the ocean. They eventually grew on him and were slightly sad to see him go.
In the end of the story everyone was sad to see him go, even though he was already dead. The short time the dead man spent in the village made him family to the people of the village. They sent him off without an anchor in hopes that he would someday return to their village. They watched as he slowly went under the water to his tomb.

Inventor From the Past

Raymond V. Damadian

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machine is an important tool in the medical field. Before is was an MRI it was a NMR. It was used in World War II to look at the composition of certain substances. Without the MRI many people would not live through their illnesses. Both of these inventions were made by Doctor Damadian. Damadian has gone on to earn many awards and gain many patents.
Doctor Damadian invented the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Machine for the war. This technology that he created was first used in World War II and then after the war. Damadian joined the faculty of SUNY Downstate Medical Center where he began researching sodium and potassium in living cells. Damadian's NMR was use to map the composition of a substance. This was done by atomic nuclei emitting radio waves at frequencies when exposed to a powerful magnetic field.
Doctor Damadian converted his NMR into the MRI that we have today. The new MRI that was created was able to create a clear image of the heart, lungs, and chest. The MRI was one of the greatest advancements in the field of medicine. Doctor Damadian went on to make advancements to the MRI. He is now working on a stand up MRI scanner.
With many patents and awards Doctor Damadian is a very accomplished man. He currently has over 40 patents to his name. He gained these patents over is life and is still going. Damadian has been awarded many awards including the National Medal of Technology and the induction into the Inventors Hall of Fame. Raymond V. Damadian is real lucky to have led such a rewarding life and is still able to go on with it.
